The miracle of Saint Hubertus

In the Middle Ages, during a hunt on Good Friday, Hubertus, a young aristocrat, pursues a deer without succeeding in catching it. As the animal turns around, exhausted, the hunter notices with amazement that the antlers of the animal are decorated with a cross. At that moment, a voice calls out to the hunter: "Hunting on a day like this? Why don't you go pray? ".

From then on, Hubertus converted to Christianity and chose to dedicate his life to God. He became the patron saint of hunters. He is also invoked against rabies. This hagiographic episode inspired the author (who remained anonymous) of this sculpture, which was made in Troyes around 1500. The statue testifies to the growth of the school of sculpture that developed in this city following its destruction by fire in 1524.
